Teacher at Teach For America
Cyrus Shepherd-Oppenheim, who is presently employed with Teach For America, brings to the classroom not only previous experience as a teacher and tutor, but also a sincere belief that education can help to address the economic and social imbalances facing members of different populations. Indeed, as a high school teacher in Los Angeles who has worked in a particularly challenging school in South Central, Shepherd-Oppenheim remains especially aware of these disparities. Cyrus Shepherd-Oppenheim accepted his post with Teach For America in 2012, after completing his own education.
Cyrus Shepherd-Oppenheim began his postsecondary studies in California at Santa Rosa Junior College. A standout student, he achieved a perfect grade point average and made the dean's list every semester of study en route to earning his Associate degree in History. He additionally gained admittance into the honor society Phi Theta Kappa. While at Santa Rosa Junior College, he also acquired invaluable classroom experience by serving as a teacher's assistant for English and math instructors. In this capacity, Shepherd-Oppenheim worked with students with unique learning needs, including some with severe intellectual disabilities.
After securing his AA, Cyrus Shepherd-Oppenheim moved east and entered the University of Pennsylvania to continue his studies in history. There, in addition to earning a place on the dean's list two consecutive semesters, he joined his school's chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He also acquired more teaching experience by tutoring students in preparation for the SAT; among other accomplishments, four of his clients bettered their scores by 100 points or more.
Aside from teaching history and mathematics, Cyrus Shepherd-Oppenheim maintains an active interest in American Sign Language. Nearly fluent in the language, he regularly attends events that raise awareness about deafness. While working toward his BA at the University of Pennsylvania, he was an Officer with UPenn In Hand, the school's sole deaf awareness group.
